The Beach Club Restaurant - Located next door in the Aston at Papakea Resort's sister property, Aston Kaanapali Shores, this breezy, open-air restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner under whirring ceiling fans. A bar prepares tropical drinks, and a band plays five nights a week. The fare consists of full breakfasts, burger/salad/sandwich lunches, and dinners of local seafood, steaks, pastas, and prime rib.

What to expect: The comforts of home, the conveniences of a hotel, and the fun-and-games of a resort bring family life to full flower. Honeymooners find the spacious grounds and unusually beautiful gardens to be the perfect spots for restful privacy. On Monday evenings, a complimentary mai tai party brings everyone together for hula lessons and Hawaiian music. Amenity highlights: Two barbecue areas, each with six gas-fired grills, see lots of action in the evenings. The two 18-hole putting greens attract both children and adults (putters available for a fee), as do the two shuffleboard courts. During the day, lazing in the two pools and sunning either on their sundecks or on the resort's many trim lawns provide the relaxation guests seek in this part of northwest Maui. Activity options include putting and golf tournaments, pool aerobics, and hula and surfing lessons. Insider tip: Unusual for Maui, the grounds include groves of bamboo. Ascending to the open walkways on the top floors of certain buildings affords guests a memorable view of lacy bamboo fronds kissed gently by tradewinds.

Spread out over 13 acres, the 11 four-story buildings comprising this 364-unit condominium resort leave lots of room among them for semi-private relaxation, including expansive lawns for lounge-chair sunning. One half of the resort precisely mirrors the other. Thus, the north half contains a large pool surrounded by a sundeck containing an extra-large whirlpool spa, and the entire complex is repeated in the south half. Two-of-everything extends to the 18-hole putting greens, the shuffleboard courts, the picnic areas with gas-fired barbecued grills, and the beachfront cabanas equipped with restrooms, soft-drink machines, and saunas. Only the lighted tennis courts, three in number, disrupt this symmetry.

Golf alone makes West Maui famous. Three award-winning championship courses nestle between the verdant West Maui Mountains and the blue Pacific in Kapalua, 5 miles north of Aston at Papakea Resort. Two other world-class courses are 2 miles south in Kaanapali. In addition, the Kapalua Golf Academy, Hawaii's premier state-of-the-art teaching facility, is located nearby. Three lighted tennis courts, two 18-hole putting greens, and two shuffleboard courts provide recreational opportunities within the resort. Across the street there's a shop that rents boogie boards, surfboards, and snorkel sets. Scuba-diving lessons and excursions as well as kayaking/snorkeling tours can be booked at the resort's tour-and-activity desk There are numerous recreational opportunities in West Maui, such as deep-sea fishing, skydiving, parasailing, helicopter/airplane sightseeing, nature/wildlife tours, and submarine excursions, in addition to the activities listed below.
