Restful condominium resort on a mile-long beachFilling 11 acres on the northern, uncrowded end of Kaanapali Beach, this condominium resort specializes in providing guests with a low-key vacation. Yet all of Kaanapali's attractions, including two tournament-grade golf courses, are within a mile of the quiet grounds.Guest units are air conditioned, and most are decorated in casual island style. All provide refrigerators and most have full kitchens. One-bedroom units are exceptionally spacious for complete home-away-from-home comfort.Three pools, two near the ocean and one tucked away toward the back of the resort, offer an alternative to the beach. But for sunrise and sunset walks, the mile-long beach is irresistible; views from the resort encompass the neighboring islands of Molokai and Lanai, sunsets, and, in winter, the whale migration.

Castaways Café - Indoors under ceiling fans and outdoors within earshot of the Pacific's gentle surf, guests dine here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Highlights include macadamia, pineapple, and banana pancakes in the morning, and pupus and local fish at dinner. On Tuesday evenings, there's a two-for-one pasta menu. The café also contains an indoor/outdoor bar that prepares tropical drinks.

What to expect: Tranquility reigns here. Families, couples, and groups settle into their homes-away-from-home and enjoy restful vacations. The grounds are expansive, the gardens soothing. There are five buildings, all but one (a six-story tower) is only two stories high, and there are just 252 units on the resort's 11 acres. Bordering the resort's grounds is one of the nicest beach-walking stretches in northwest Maui. Amenity highlights: Two swimming pools lie next to one another near the ocean, and a third pool is available in a more secluded spot. The main pool’s sundeck is spacious, with lawns around the resort providing alternative sunning areas. For children ages 5–12, Camp Kaanapali (at Aston Maui Kaanapali Villas' sister resort, Aston Kaanapali Shores, 2 miles north) provides morning and afternoon sessions of Hawaiian activities and education, including a Sugar Cane Train ride. Children can also borrow games from the front desk. Insider tip: An open-air, motorized trolley stops outside the lobby about every 40 minutes, transporting guests without charge around the 2-mile-long Kaanapali resort community.

Characteristic of the 252-unit resort's restful ambience, even the lobby's rock-garden fountain barely whispers. For more action, guests visit the lobby's activity desk, where they can book tours and other activities all over Maui and even arrange car rentals. Also in the lobby is a convenience store/gift shop at which video tapes can be rented. There's a small lending library for books, too. A large laundry facility at the back of the resort provides convenience, and a shuffleboard court near the beach offers low-key competition.

Golf alone makes West Maui famous. Two world-class courses are located 1 mile south of the resort. Three award-winning, championship courses nestle between the verdant West Maui Mountains and the blue Pacific in Kapalua, 6 miles north. In addition, the Kapalua Golf Academy, Hawaii's premier state-of-the-art teaching facility, is located nearby. Public tennis centers are located 1 mile south. Snorkel sets, boogie boards, paddle boats, small catamarans, windsurfers, beach backrests, and "cabanas" with adjustable tentlike shades can be rented on the beach. From the beach about a mile south, catamarans offer whale-watching trips during the winter and snorkeling and scuba excursions as well as dinner cruises year-round.
