Haleakala National Park - 68 miles Kahului Airport (OGG): Approximate driving time is 50 minutes and distance is 34 miles. Kahana Reef is located west of the airport on Maui's sunny Kaanapali Coast. The drive through the central valley south is faster, because of the West Maui Mountains. The northern route via Kapalua can take up to three hours over narrow, winding lanes. Taxis between airport and resort are available, but the most common form of transportation is a rental car. Within walking distance, two blocks from Kahana Reef, a shuttle bus serves the resort communities of Kaanapali and Lahaina. For other excursions, the best bet on Maui is a rental car.

This two-acre condo resort consists of three four-story buildings. It has 88 units decorated in island style, all of which include kitchens with refrigerators, four-burner stoves, dishwashers, and microwaves. Units measure 710 square feet and have large, furnished lanais with unobstructed ocean views. They feature one bedroom with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, a sofa bed in the living room, and individually designed bathrooms. A bar-style counter separates the kitchen from the living area. Two ceiling fans substitute for air conditioning. All rooms are non-smoking. Maid service is available for an additional fee.

The hotel has a grassy lawn overlooking the ocean for sunbathing. From there, guests may make use of a small strip of sandy beach, but most of the small area between the grass and the ocean is rocky. Amenity highlights: The spacious, furnished balconies of these condos curve outward toward a garden with freshwater pool, two barbecues, a picnic area, and two stone stairways that lead into the surf of Kahana reef. Common areas of this 88-unit, four-story condominium complex, built in 1973, were all renovated in 2003. Shops and restaurants are a 10-minute walk away. Insider tip: For some high-end pampering and discreet people-watching, guests can drive five miles south to the resort community of Kaanapali, with its sandy beaches, fascinating Whaling Museum, beachfront bars—some with tables on the sand—and its flamboyant resorts that serve drinks in style.

Kahana Reef's freshwater pool faces the ocean and flanks two stone stairways that give access to excellent snorkeling reefs. Farther out, experienced surfers tackle Kahana's waves. Equipment rentals for ocean activities are just one or two blocks away. A fitness center is three blocks away. Kahana is five miles from the golf courses, tennis courts, swimming beaches, and other recreational activities of two resort communities, Kapalua and Kaanapali.
