Off-beach-priced condominiums with beachfront access Arrayed on a gentle slope facing the ocean and bordered on two sides by a tournament-level golf course, this condominium resort in northwest Maui's Kaanapali beach community is just a five-minute walk from its own private beachfront cabana yet offers guests off-beach pricing. Units are exceptionally spacious, air-conditioned, and furnished comfortably in island style. Each has a unit-wide lanai (balcony or patio), a full kitchen that's completely equipped for cooking and dining, a washer/dryer, and a VCR. Three pools, one large with a spacious sundeck and barbecue area and two small, provide alternatives to the beach. The beach and private cabana can be reached by an easy walk downhill or by the resort's complimentary golf-cart shuttle service.

What to expect: Because it's like living in paradise and not simply visiting, the Outrigger Maui Eldorado attracts families, groups, and couples seeking home-style accommodations and restful tranquility. The North Course (the more famous of Kaanapali's two championship courses) runs along two sides of the resort, providing green-belt isolation from neighboring resorts as well as easy access for golf-minded guests. Amenity highlights: The beachfront cabana serves as a private club for Outrigger Maui Eldorado guests. It consists of two large, airy rooms with ceiling fans and a full kitchen that includes a microwave oven as well as a full-size range. There's plenty of counter space for preparing group meals, an ice-making machine for chilling drinks, and a soft drink/snack machine. Dishes, glasses, and cookware are in the cupboards. Complimentary towels and beach backrests for setting in the sand right outside the cabana are handed out by an attendant. Showers and restrooms are situated behind the towel stand. Along the cabana's front runs a large sundeck supplied with lounge chairs. A short walk along the sand lies Black Rock, Kaanapali Beach's famous lava promontory, a sacred place for ancient Hawaiians and a superb snorkeling spot. Insider Tip: The beachfront cabana can be rented after 5:30 PM for private parties.

One of two public, tournament-grade golf courses are adjacent to the Outrigger Maui Eldorado. The other is nearby, and there are three other courses at Kapalua just 7 miles north. Snorkel sets, boogie boards, aqua eyes (boogie boards with an inset face mask), scuba gear, kayaks, ocean rafts, small catamarans, beach umbrellas, jetskis, and "cabanas" consisting of padded beach lounges and adjustable tentlike shades can be rented along Kaanapali Beach on the other side of Black Rock from the Outrigger Maui Eldorado. Also from the beach south of Black Rock, catamarans offer whale-watching trips during the winter and snorkeling and scuba excursions as well as dinner cruises year-round. Public tennis centers are located at the Royal Lahaina Resort, the Maui Marriott Hotel, and the Sheraton Maui Hotel. The Outrigger Maui Eldorado Resort and the Kaanapali area also feature deep-sea fishing, skydiving, parasailing, helicopter/airplane sightseeing, nature/wildlife, tours, and submarine excursions in addition to the recreational activities listed below.
